How to design a life your business serves
The short answer: life design means deciding what you want your ordinary week to look like — your time, health, relationships and priorities — and then shaping the business to fit that, instead of letting the business decide by default. For owners, it’s the step that has to come first.
Why the business wins by default
If you don’t design your life on purpose, the business designs it for you — and it’s a demanding designer. Work expands to fill every hour you leave unguarded. Without a shape you’ve chosen, “just this once” becomes every evening, and the life you meant to have keeps getting postponed to a quieter season that never comes.
A simple way to design it
- Describe your ideal ordinary day. Not a holiday — a normal Tuesday you’d be glad to live. When do you start? Who’s around? What’s your body doing?
- Name your non-negotiables. The handful of things — sleep, a finish time, time with people you love — that don’t get traded away.
- Put them in the calendar first. Protect them before the business fills the space.
- Then fit the business around that. Now the question becomes “how must the business work to allow this?” — which is a design brief, not a fantasy.
Doesn’t the business suffer?
It’s the opposite. Constraints force clarity. When your week has a fixed shape, you stop tolerating the low-value work and the dependence on you, because there’s no longer room for it. A designed life is what pushes you to finally work on the business — see Make Your Business Really Work — rather than drowning in it.
